Foreward - An Idea Project, by Ed WhitfieldAt last I am finished and as I look back over the last three months and think about what I had set out to express, I'm not entirely sure I have fully satisfied that will for expression. But I am pleased, even if over the course of reading these essays you find that I become slightly repetitive in sentiment. Then I wonder, how can anyone fully express themselves in four weeks work? I can only hope that when my brain has been replenished and I'm ready for more, that I can develop on these points and bring up new ones. I think back to the summer, over half a year ago, and recall the beginnings of the ideas I had conceived, of how wonderful it would be if everyone took part in the three step spiral dynamics idea, and created a tightly knit, well organised force to combat global capitalism. Then, a few months later I realised that that network was well underway. But, I must admit I did imagine myself traveling with my little time bomb that I would be so proud to have created. I would have traveled Europe and left the zine as I went along. Hopefully others would help me in reprinting it in different languages and reissuing it. And, as I was away the popularity of the whole thing would manifest itself in the amount of feedback on the website I was to create. This was the dream I began with all those months ago yet it is not the reality I am presented with. Like I said, I'm not sure if I have fully expressed the original thought. In fact I can safely say it has only been an attempt. And the second point is that it is not as original as I had first believed. So really it can only be directed, not to the loose left I had originally envisioned, but to those who seek more and can't find out where to get it. Instead of creating a movement that I had hoped for so selfishly, I have tapped into the movement of movements, I have realised the door and how to open it and I guess all this idea can do now is to help others realise this door and how to unlock it for themselves. I would like to take this opportunity to recognise two books. Firstly 'Days of War, Nights of Love' for the inspiration and idealism, and secondly 'We Are Everywhere' for the realisation and the realism. The war is outside and it's raging. I would also like to thank Collins dictionary, the Open University course DD100, 'America Rules' by Tom Hannahoe and innumerable zines and websites for their input. Thanks to Eoin, who has promised to publish this after the bastard received returns on shares (the irony!). Thanks to Dee and Stephen for the editing they are about to do. To D.P Roberts at Free World Syndicate and to the world for being such a #@&$* I would otherwise be bored off my ass sitting under a palm tree on a bleached white beach guzzling rum because of. . . If you would like to get in contact with either me or the New Kilcoole Collective, you can contact me from my home page on this site. For free thinking go to Crimethinc.com and synd.org. I was going to give a long list of links but I'm too tired now so. . . Oh, also try the Zapatista index. As always and with everything, this is for Sarah. YA BASTA!!! This document is copyleft as intellectual property is a farce! Please feel free to reproduce this in its entirety, or any portion of it you may find handy. -- Ed Whitfield, February 2004 Back to An Idea Project Index More of Ed's Opinion Columns |
